Procurement professionals are in high demand and now have the ability to earn greater compensation than ever before. And, these days, compensation can come in different forms – financial compensation mixed with other incentives that may be even more appealing to a new generation of workforce. Here are a few considerations when deciding on your next career move or if you’re looking to hire top procurement talent.
Compensation – Until recently, companies could offer salary at midpoint or below and secure their candidate of choice. Now, in order to attract top talent, companies must offer competitive salaries in addition to other aspects of compensation, including: insurance, 401K, stock options, PTO, bonuses, and other financial incentives. Sign-on bonuses are not uncommon, and are often a good way to secure employees who might be considering similar opportunities.
Work/Life Balance – This continues to resonate with those seeking new opportunities. More than one-half (53%) of employees reported work/life balance was very important to their job satisfaction–the same percentage as base rate of pay!
Flexible Schedules – Many in today’s workforce favor a position that offers a remote or semi-remote work arrangement–with a lessened commute or flex time–rather than one that offers more financial compensation. Quite often, individuals are willing to travel to stakeholder locations to develop relationships, but then want to leverage remote work possibilities once relationships become more established. Companies are finding that flexible opportunities often attract the best talent.
Cultural Fit – A key consideration when selecting a career opportunity is the organization’s culture – is it a good fit? In the age of social media, websites like glassdoor.com allow employees to post reviews on their employer, including salary information and the company’s interview process. This is easily accessible and often used by candidates when considering a company. Is this someplace where others enjoy working and have been treated fairly? Companies need to take necessary steps to improve culture and repair their image if they do not have a favorable online reputation. This can be done by being open and honest during interviews and offering your company’s plans to remedy the situation.
